The Subaru FB-series engines generally have a much better head gasket reputation than the older EJ engines, especially the EJ25. The main reason is that Subaru changed both the head gasket design and the way the engine manages heat and cylinder pressure. The FB engines use a more robust MLS gasket arrangement with improved sealing around the cylinders and coolant passages. The gasket and sealing surfaces were designed with the FB’s different block/head architecture in mind. The FB engine was redesigned from the EJ rather than simply being an updated EJ. The FB has a more modern open deck block design, revised cylinder head construction, different coolant passages, improved control thermal expansion, more consistent clamping/sealing between the head and block. The FB’s cooling system was redesigned to provide more consistent temperature control around the cylinders and cylinder head. That’s important because repeated temperature cycling is one of the enemies of a head gasket. Every time the engine heats up and cools down, the aluminum head and block expand and contract at different rates. With this new information and redesign by Subaru, the head gaskets do not necessarily need replacement that’s why we offer this engine reseal kit without the head gaskets. The more common issue for the FB motors is resealing the timing cover, the upper and lower oil pans, and the cam boxes on both sides and that’s exactly what this kit does.
