Description
On a Subaru, the timing hole plug (often called a timing inspection plug) is worth replacing when it is removed because it seals an opening in the timing cover or related area. When and why should you replace it? Replace it when the rubber hardens and shrinks with age, allowing oil to seep around the plug. A damaged or hardened plug can allow contaminants into the timing area. New rubber is flexible and conforms to the opening much better than an old plug. If the plug is removed during timing belt, engine, or resealing work, replacing it avoids reinstalling a 10-20 year old rubber seal.
